In other words, contrary to traditional long-shank hackamores that have the potential to crank down on the sensitive nose bones and hurt just as much (if not more) than bits, these lower-shank (less leverage) hackamores ultimately mean far less discomfort for your horse. 

The key goal here is to offer direction & clear cues without adding pain to the equation where your horse would have to compensate by having to dump more & more endorphines to cope with the pain. Ever hear the cowboy saying "That horse needs a harsher bit!"...? This is why horses get duller and duller... more hard-mouthed! I always tell customers "Control is not in the horse's mouth, it's in their MIND". Take away the pain, couple it with fair & mindful horsemanship, and you've got a horse who will WANT to cooperate with you again! THAT is true partnership.
